چکیده

Some image quality measures are proposed in this paper. The most desired feature of these method is high correlation with diagnostic accuracy of compressed medical images. The chi-square measure (global and local) as a measure of statistical similarity of original and compressed image data, REOBD as a measure of blocking effect and diagnostic quality coefficient give vector measure of diagnostic accuracy of compressed images. Two ways of estimating the diagnostic quality coefficient are presented: objective method of diagnostic accuracy evaluation based on analysis of changes of the diagnostic parameters and proposed subjective (by physician) evaluation of diagnostic quality.

Tree-structured vector quantization of CT chest scans: image quality and diagnostic accuracy

The authors apply a lossy compression algorithm to medical images, and quantify the quality of the images by the diagnostic performance of radiologists, as well as by traditional signal-to-noise ratios and subjective ratings. The authors' study is unlike previous studies of the effects of lossy compression in that they consider nonbinary detection tasks, simulate actual diagnostic practice inst...

Quality Assessment of Compressed MR Medical Images using General Regression Neural Network

Medical imaging plays a major role in contemporary health care, both as a tool in primary diagnosis and as a guide for surgical and therapeutic procedures. Compression of radiological images is an effective mechanism for storage and transmission. The use of such images for teleradiology is of increasing importance, with one of the main reasons being the ability to call upon remotely located dia...

Determining optimal medical image compression: psychometric and image distortion analysis

BACKGROUND Storage issues and bandwidth over networks have led to a need to optimally compress medical imaging files while leaving clinical image quality uncompromised. METHODS To determine the range of clinically acceptable medical image compression across multiple modalities (CT, MR, and XR), we performed psychometric analysis of image distortion thresholds using physician readers and also ...

Texture Classification of Diffused Liver Diseases Using Wavelet Transforms

Introduction: A major problem facing the patients with chronic liver diseases is the diagnostic procedure.  The conventional diagnostic method depends mainly on needle biopsy which is an invasive method. There  are  some  approaches  to  develop  a  reliable  noninvasive  method  of  evaluating  histological  changes  in  sonograms. The main characteristic used to distinguish between the normal...

CT colonography with teleradiology: effect of lossy wavelet compression on polyp detection--initial observations.

PURPOSE To assess the consequences of lossy compression on the diagnostic accuracy of CT colonography for detecting colonic polyps. MATERIALS AND METHODS Helical CT images of cleansed colonic segments were evaluated. Source images were compressed to 1:1, 10:1, and 20:1 ratios with lossy wavelet compression. Two independent readers blinded to corresponding colonoscopic results analyzed 144 ran...
